Fr. Luke (Leo)) Zimmerman of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary was born on December 31, 1897, in Chicago, Illinois to Bernard and Mary Anna (nee Michel) Zimmerman. He entered the Novitiate of the Discalced Carmelite Friars on August 18, 1922, at Holy Hill in Hubertus, Wisconsin, taking the name, Brother Luke of the Assumption. He made his profession of Simple Vows on August 19, 1923, studied Philosophy at Holy Hill and Theology at St. Florian/Sacred Heart Monastery, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Father made his Solemn Profession as a Carmelite at St. Florian Catholic Church and was ordained in St. Florian’s lower church by Archbishop Messmer on December 2, 1928. After ordination, Fr. Luke was assigned to St. Florian as Associate Pastor from 1935-1957 when he also served as spiritual director for the school’s CYO (Catholic Youth Organization). The years 1957-1970 found Father at the Monastery of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Washington, DC. In 1960, he returned to Holy Hill and from that time on into his semi-retirement, he was stationed in various houses of the Carmelites until his death on April 26, 1976.
Fr. Luke Zimmerman died on April 26, 1976 and is buried at the Carmelite Cemtery in Hubertus, Wisconsin.
