Br. Burchard (Valentine) Schraut of the Mother of God was born February 14, 1873 in Kürnach, Wuerzburg, Bavaria to parents Kasper and Barbara Schraut.

Br. Burchard was born in Bavaria and was clothed in the Carmelite habit on February 26, 1901 in Regensburg. He made his simple profession on May 1, 1906 in Reisach and his solemn profession on May 1, 1909.

Br. Burchard spent all his U.S. religious life at St. Florian, Milwaukee, Wisconsin and worked very hard. For a time, he was the only Brother there. He always kept a large garden and put much time in it with good results. He took pride in always having his first lettuce out of the hot-bed for Easter. He took care of the Sacristy for a long time too and was handy at all jobs.

Br. Burchard died in St. Mary’s Hospital, Milwaukee on December 14, 1944. His funeral Mass was held at St. Florian at 9 o’clock on December 18, 1944 and was buried on this same day at the Carmelite Cemetery in Holy Hill, Hubertus, Wisconsin.
