Br. Sebastian (Joseph) Reale of the Immaculate Conception was born on July 16, 1944, in Cambridge, Massachusetts to parents Sebastian and Alice (nee Murray) Reale.
On August 1, 1962, Br. Sebastian entered the Discalced Carmelite Novitiate in Waverly, New York and would make his first profession there on July 16, 1965. On July 16, 1970 he would make his Solemn Profession in Brookline, Massachusetts. Also in 1970, he would begin his studies for a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing at Boston College and would later minister in a Boston area hospital’s psychiatric ward.
Br. Sebastian helped with the cooking in the Peterborough, New Hampshire Minor Seminary from 1965-1966 and throughout his religious life at various monasteries. During his lifetime, he was conventual at Brookline, MA; Peterborough, NH; Washington, DC; and Brighton, MA where he would remain until 2006 when he was placed under the Provincial and allowed to live outside the community. He lived for many years with his sister in Maine until her passing in 2025. He then moved to Kennebunk Rehabilitation Center in Maine where he died peacefully with his family by his side. Br. Sebastian was 82 years old at his passing and was professed a Discalced Carmelite Friar for 61 years. He is buried at Saint Joseph’s Cemetery in West Roxbury, Massachusetts
