Fr. Godfried (Francis) Hirschberg of the Sacred Heart of Jesus was born in Ursberg, Bavaria, Germany to parents Andrew and Cresentia (nee Ost) Hirschberg. He was admitted to the Discalced Carmelite Order on June 17, 1903, in Reisach, Bavaria, Germany; made his simple profession on June 17, 1904, in Reisach; his solemn profession in Geleen, Holland and was ordained to the priesthood by Bishop Drehmans on March 27, 1907 in Roermand, Holland. During his priestly ministry in the United States, Father Godfried served as Master of Novices (1921), Provincial Delegate and Vicar of Holy Hill (1939-1941). Friars recalled that Father was the Holy Hill monastery librarian, tended the monastery’s greenhouse garden, answered the monastery phones and was regularly available to hear confessions. Fr. Godfried died on March 8, 1971, and is buried at the Carmelite Cemetery in Hubertus, Wisconsin.
