Fr. Godfrey (Francis) Hirschberg of the Sacred Heart of Jesus was born in Ursberg, Bavaria, Germany to parents Andrew and Cresentia (nee Ost) Hirschberg. He was admitted to the Discalced Carmelite Order on June 17, 1903 in Reisach, Bavaria, Germany; made his simple profession on June 17, 1904 in Reisach; his solemn profession in Geleen, Holland and was ordained to the priesthood by Bishop Drehmans on March 27, 1907 in Roermand, Holland. During his priestly ministry in the United States, Father Godfrey served as Master of Novices (1921), Provincial Delegate and Vicar of Holy Hill (1939-1941). Friars recalled that Father was the Holy Hill monastery librarian, tended the monastery’s greenhouse garden, answered the monastery phones and was regularly available to hear confessions. Fr. Godfrey died on March 8, 1971 and is buried at the Carmelite Cemetery in Hubertus, Wisconsin.
