Fr. Raphael (Joseph) Heinz of Saint Joseph was born in Chicago, Illinois on March 9, 1898, to Jacob and Anna (Rick) Heinz. He attended the University of Notre Dame, South Bend, Indiana and received training at the Carmelite seminary at Holy Hill, Hubertus Wisconsin. Father was ordained on September 27, 1927, by Archbishop S. G. Messmer at St. Florian Catholic Church, Milwaukee; the first priest to be ordained into the Order of the Discalced Carmelites in the United States.

Fr. Raphael was Provincial Superior from 1948-1951 and pastor of St. Florian Church from 1939-1951. In later years, he served as Catholic chaplain at Wood’s Veteran Hospital, Milwaukee until his death on March 22, 1959. Fr. Raphael is buried at the Carmelite Cemetery, Hubertus, Wisconsin.
