Fr. Augustine (Peter) Hamers of Mary and Joseph was born on March 26, 1873, in Münster Geleen, Roermund, Holland to parents A. C. and M. U (Kauber) Hamers. He studied and served for a time with the Calced Order of Friars before entering the Discalced Carmelite Order on November 3, 1905, in Reisach, Bavaria, Germany. He was ordained on August 10, 1896, by Bishop V Wetesing in Utrecht, Holland and made his Solemn Profession as a Discalced Carmelite Friar on November 5, 1906.
Fr. Augustine’s ministry in America is evident by his years as Pastor of St. Florian Parish, West Milwaukee, Wisconsin (1924-1929). While there he was remembered as “an earnest priest, uncompromising with the spirit of the world. As a pastor he was the interpreter of the word of Christ: He who is not with me is against Me~He who believes not shall be condemned”. Fr. Augustine also served as Provincial Delegate from 1930-1939. Father died on January 28, 1942, and is the first grave in the first row at the Carmelite Cemetery, Hubertus. Wisconsin.
