Fr. Bernard (Edward) Gerl of the Blessed Sacrament was born on January 8, 1861 in the Town of Bodenstein, Germany to parents Matthias and Maria (nee Aumüller) Gerl. He entered the Discalced Carmelite Order on June 26, 1877, made his solemn profession on June 26, 1877 and was ordained to the priesthood on September 8, 1883 by Bishop Sanestry in Ratisbon, Bavaria, Germany. On February 17, 1915, Father became a United States citizen, having resided in the country for at least five years and in the State of Wisconsin for at least one year. On November 3, 1942, Fr. Bernard joined the newly formed Brookline Community in Massachusetts and was granted conventuality on January 7, 1943. Little information is available about Father’s priestly ministries during his lifetime. Fr. Bernard died in 1948 and is buried at the Carmelite Cemetery in Hubertus, Wisconsin.
